Optimizing Transit for Everyone: A Deep Dive into GO Transit’s Accessibility Standards

Project Type

UX Research
Inclusive Design

This project was conducted as a comprehensive accessibility audit for GO Transit, the regional public transit system serving the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The primary focus was to evaluate the digital platform's compliance with WCAG 2.1 standards, ensuring that essential transit information, from trip planning to fare management, is accessible to all users, including those with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments.

The analytical work involved a deep dive into screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, and color contrast ratios to identify critical barriers in the current user journey. In the UX refinement phase, I prioritized a clear information hierarchy and intuitive focus states, proposing structural adjustments that align with inclusive design principles to reduce cognitive load and eliminate navigational friction for assistive technology users.

By bridging the gap between complex transit data and accessible interface design, this project positions the GO Transit digital experience as a more equitable and reliable service, ensuring that seamless commuting is a reality for every passenger in Ontario.
